Is Teeth Whitening right for me?
Whether you're concerned about stains, yellowing or discoloration, teeth whitening can help improve your smile. Whitening offers quick, long-lasting results that will help you feel proud of your teeth. Rosemarie Márquez DMD, PA, offers teeth whitening services in St. Petersburg and shares some information that will help you decide if teeth whitening is right for you.
Teeth whitening is a simple procedure
Teeth whitening can often be accomplished during one visit to your dentist, or you may choose to use a take home whitening kit. If you choose in-office whitening, your dentist will apply a substance that will protect your gums and roots, and then coat your teeth with a whitening agent. The agent remains on your teeth for one hour. Depending on the amount of whitening you prefer, you may need an additional session or two.
When you choose the at-home method, your dentist will take an impression of your upper and lower teeth. The impression is used to make trays for at-home whitening. Before you use the trays, you'll add a whitening product to them and then place them in your mouth. In-home whitening trays are very effective at brightening teeth but take longer than in-office whitening.
Whitening removes stains
Over time, your teeth can become dull and stained. Whitening removes these surface stains and brightens your smile. Any food or beverage that will stain a white tee shirt will stain your teeth, including:
- Tomato-based foods
- Sports drinks
